OEM Disks:
Original Equipment Manufacturer disks usually come with your computer and say something like "system restore", or "operating system cd" There are some exceptions such as HP & Compaq Desktops which for some reason have not been providing these disks to customers in spite of customer complaints, (IBM also). These disks also provide the necessary drivers. There will be an additional charge for finding drivers, because there are no OEM disks.

Why isn't a flat
fee the always the best?
If someone claims to fix any computer problem for fifty dollars except for parts, they are likely to replace the part with a new one without attempting a repair. It's easy to fix any computer problem if you simply throw in a new part, however sometimes the part is much more expensive then the cost or a repair. For instance: a customer has a problem where the monitor screen goes dark and the technician traces the problem to the graphics card or drivers. The flat-rate technician simply throws in a new graphics card with a price of $60.00 (this is a low priced graphic card) and then charges his $50.00 labor fee. The customer now pays a total of $110.00 plus having to disassemble and drop off the computer. The flexible technician, charging $35.00 per hour spends 2 hours discovering that that the graphics card's fan was dirty and over heating, and cleans the fan solving the problem. The customer now pays $70.00 and didn't even have to drop the computer off. Why would the flat-rate technician take the time to actually diagnose the problem when its much easier to plug and chug. I don't blame the flat-rate technician however, because diagnosing is part science and art and requires talent. Back to Top
